Dear IFSTAL Community,

We hope you had a good Christmas and New Year break, and are feeling ready to forge ahead with 2017. We are certainly gearing up to another busy term of events, workshops and away days. Here is a round up of what is going on.

IFSTAL Symposium: Technology – A Silver Bullet for the Food System?

Registration for the IFSTAL Symposium in January still open, but closing on Friday 20th January!

This will be on the theme of technology, bringing together academics, students, and professionals from a range of sectors to discuss the role of technology in future food systems. We have lots of great speakers confirmed - Dr Susanne Padel from the Organic Research Centre, Julie Brown Director of Growing Communities, Prof. Jane Dixon at City University, Rokiah Yaman Director of Community by Design, Prof. Erik Millstone from the STEPS Centre at Sussex University and Harley Stoddard from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board...to name a few! For more details, see the event page on the Portal.

Please book your place here on Eventbrite as soon as possible. It's free for students but numbers are limited. The first five students to register from non-London institutions will have their transport expenses reimbursed.

This is a public event, so please send this out to your networks and spread the word!

There's also information on the forthcoming activities and events for this term under the Events tile on the Portal. Units 3 and 4 will be launched on the Portal on the 23rd of January, and accompanied by face to face workshops locally, as well as another Away Day on Saturday 4th March in Oxford.

Postgraduate forum on organic farming 

This session will provide MSc and PhD students a chance to provide updates on their work in areas related to organic farming and agroecology.  This can include plans for future research or results from completed work.

The postgraduate forum is part of the Organic Producers’ Conference in Birmingham 1-2 Feb 2017 . This will be a fringe workshop at 17.45 to 18.45 on Wednesday Feb 1st. Students will need to book tickets for the Conference, some bursaries are available. Send details of your thesis/project, institute and a title for your presentation to Phil Sumption and Laurence Smith at ORC by 13th January 2017.

Call for sessions and papers  for the Oxford Food Forum (to take place on April 29th 2017) ‘Beyond the Silo: Understanding and Building Linkages across the Food System’.

We invite proposals for a broad range of presentations and workshops. Academic researchers (graduate and early career) across the social and biological sciences are invited to submit a title and abstract for a 15-minute oral paper/presentation. Those outside academia are also welcome to submit an abstract or outline of a presentation showcasing their work in or perspective on the food system. We also welcome proposals for interactive workshops, discussion sessions, posters, or film viewings. For submissions and questions, please contact Abigail Bok at abigail.bok@keble.ox.ac.uk
