This is our last correspondence of 2016, which means, firstly, WELL DONE... we all survived term 1!
We had a great inaugural public lecture delivered by food journalist Sheila Dillon last Monday 5th December. The BBC Radio 4 star examined the history of food programming and food journalism, noting what does and doesn't make it into the media, how it's presented and how this shapes society's relationship with food.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in person at SOAS, University of London, as well as online and for the livestreaming events in Oxford, Reading and Warwick.

IFSTAL SYMPOSIUM: Technology – A Silver Bullet for the Food System?
(Saturday 28th January @ RVC Camden, London)
Registration for the IFSTAL Symposium in January is now open!
This will be on the theme of technology, bringing together academics, students, and professionals from a range of sectors to discuss the role of technology in future food systems. For more details, see the event page on the Portal.
Please book your place here on Eventbrite as soon as possible. It's free for students but numbers are limited. The first five students to register from non-London institutions will have their transport expenses reimbursed.
Many of you are involved in all kinds of interesting and relevant projects outside your studies. As part of our IFSTAL Technology Symposium on Saturday 28th January 2017, we would like to include demonstrations of interesting food technologies. These could be high or low tech and could be at the design stage or fully functioning. So if you've been involved in a project developing a food technology of any kind, from seed drill to nutrition app, and are interested in presenting at the Symposium, please do get in touch by using the Symposium Discussion Forum.
IFSTAL PORTAL ONLINE RESOURCES
We've had a busy first term which many of you have been involved in. If you'd like to review or add something, or catch up on anything you missed, do go to the IFSTAL Portal Events Page to take a look at the reports and resources from the recent Away Day, PhD Symposium and Unit 1 and 2 Workshops.
There's also information on the forthcoming activities and events for terms 2 and 3. We will be kicking off with the public Symposium. Also notably, units 3 and 4 will be available in the new year, and accompanied by face to face workshops locally, as well as another Away Day.
THE IFSTAL COMMUNITY
There is an incredible diversity of people in our IFSTAL community. It's great to hear what you're all doing and your backgrounds. If you're new or you haven’t introduced yourself to everyone yet, then please do so here.

Two jobs open at Chatham in Falk School of Sustainability — one is a regular faculty position with focal area of agroecology — although we mean that writ large and through an interdisciplinary lens — and it reports to Food Studies. The other is a director of sustainable agriculture, but with some teaching responsibilities (that is, we’d like someone who has run a campus farm but also has a PhD). This reports to the dean of the school and the executive director of the campus (because of the outreach and farm responsibilities). The Director of Sustainable Ag position — they are reviewing applications now and beginning the process. Agroecology Faculty will start reviewing applications in January.
