IFSTAL SECOND YEAR OVERHAUL:
We are currently planning an IFSTAL overhaul for the second year of the programme. As IFSTAL alumni you will still have access to the VLE. However, you will have to register a new, non-university email address. We will provide more details of this in a future email digest - so keep an eye open for that.
We want to make sure that you still have access to the programme, and hope to see you at some of our public events. Although we will be using the IFSTAL LinkedIn group to communicate to you all, we will also fully advertise internships and placements on the VLE itself.
We are currently producing new content for the second year, so there will be new material for you to view. There will also be links to further reading material on food systems, if you want to travel further on your food systems journey. You can also check out our provisional new programme overview of events, at the top menu bar of the VLE, or click here.
IFSTAL Year 2 Launch - If you’re staying on in your postgraduate studies at one of our institutions, or know someone who might be interested in learning about what we do, put the Year 2 IFSTAL Launch date in your diary. We will have simultaneous events in Oxford, Warwick, Reading and London (City) for all to attend on Tuesday 18th October in the late afternoon/early evening. Look out for details!
VLE Shut Down
In order to implement the new VLE structure, the VLE will be shut down for two weeks from 14th September. Make sure that you have any material that you need prior to the shut down.

Food Matters Live
This year IFSTAL will have a presence at Food Matters Live (FML), in London, 22nd - 24th November 2016. We have booked a stand at Food Matters Live this year, and need some helpers! A few hours supporting the programme on any of the 3 days would be most helpful and gives you an opportunity to benefit from the event also:
Join thousands of professionals from across the food and drink industry, nutrition and health sectors at the UK’s first cross-sector event dedicated to food, health and nutrition.
Over the three days of the event, there will be a chance to:
- Debate the most important issues facing the food, health and nutrition sectors in the Food Matters Live Conference.
- Meet over 600 exhibitors at the forefront of driving nutritional improvements in food and drink
- Benefit from the unrivalled learning opportunity presented by the 300 seminar speakers
- Participate in a series of interactive attractions, practical demonstrations and live tastings taking place each day
- We will send more information on how to sign up in the coming digests
Micro-internship @ Compassion in World Farming
Compassion in World Farming are a global NGO campaigning peacefully to end all factory farming practices. They believe that the biggest cause of cruelty on the planet deserves a focused, specialised approach – and so only work on farm animal welfare.
The micro-internship will involve supporting the CIWF Animals are Not Freight Campaign on 29th August 2016. This could involve: helping set up, taking part in a small stunt, talking to supporters, taking photos, tweeting.

Food Systems and Natural Resources MOOC
From 8th August to 11th September Future Learn are offering a MOOC developed by the Stockholm Environment Institute on ‘Food and Our Future: Sustainable Food Systems in Southeast Asia’. You can join it here

IFSTAL will pay travel expenses for up to 2 students on the condition that you write a blog about what you learnt and how it can apply to teaching and learning on food systems. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please email your local EC.
A PhD scholarship is available from Massey University, New Zealand, for someone to work on sustainable diets/sustainable food systems for Pacific Island countries. It's open to NZ and international students and provides NZD 25,000 per year for three years. Food composition work will necessarily feature in the research. Applications close September 5th 2016. Sustainable Farming Campaign Coordinator, for Sustain, London.
The deadline for applications is 5pm, Thursday 8th September 2016. This is a part-time post, and the hours or contract length may be extended, subject to successful fundraising, with some fundraising currently in progress. Event - Edible Utopia, Somerset House, London
There are also three days of creative experimentation around food at Somerset House, London on the 18th, 20th and 21st of August.
Edible Utopia is a creative experiment designed by a group of artists and academics to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia. Devised by Clare Patey, Tim Mitchell, Sophie Mason, Jane Levi and Katherine McNeil, it investigates the multi-layered utopian possibilities within food, to be explored through collective growing, cooking, feasting and conversation. Participants and visitors will rediscover these as shared, life-enhancing activities filled with utopian potential, revealed by and within the extended Somerset House and King’s College site.
