Workplace Update – July 2020
This is the last workplace update before the summer break, and I wish you all a restful and productive (for those of you writing up) couple of months. We will be back in September with a new combined newsletter including all the opportunities you see in the workplace update, but also interesting papers, conferences and requests from the wider community that you see in the digest. Make sure your email is updated on the portal so you continue to receive them!
For those of you nearing the end of your IFSTAL journey, here are the links for staying in touch with us and the rest of the community:
· Update your portal email address: in order to keep receiving these emails as an alumnus, ensure that you update your email address on the portal as your institutional email will expire.
· Complete your learning journey: as a record of your learning and to support your development as a “reflexive practitioner”, now is a good time to complete your understanding of how IFSTAL has influenced your thinking over the past year.
· Request your attendance certificate: Contact your local EC for more detail so you can use this in employment applications.
· Add IFSTAL to LinkedIn: This is the best place to build your professional network, and if you add IFSTAL under education, you will be automatically added to the alumni list you will find on the IFSTAL page.
Events and volunteering opportunities for networking and experience:
Volunteering roles are usually unpaid and some organisations will pay your travel or lunch. It is important that all unpaid work is agreed upfront with an organisation and you are aware of your professional value to avoid any exploitative practices. If you are in any doubt, as always, please get in touch with your careers service or anyone in the IFSTAL team.
If you are interested in gaining experience at a particular organisation, please get in touch, we may have a contact that we can approach for an opportunity.
This is an area where you can really use your existing, and build your future network. Think about helping at an event, or blogging, contact your local EC to see what is running this term at your local institution that you could support.
Consider the social distancing guidelines when taking on any voluntary or short-term role. Some roles can be performed remotely, and this is also a time where organisations may be overloaded and unable to respond to speculative approaches, so don’t be disheartened, or put off from applying again in the future.
