Dear IFSTAL participants, 

A warm welcome to all new IFSTAL students who are just starting their courses and signing up to join the IFSTAL network. We have an exciting year planned for you! To get the most from IFSTAL do fill out your profile page on the portal and introduce yourself on our discussion forum.  

Read on for more information and do keep an eye on the IFSTAL Portal for information about IFSTAL events and resources. To those IFSTAL alumni who have now finished their studies we wish you good luck for the future and we really hope you stay engaged with IFSTALsee the events section on the portal for more detail on how to attend, we'd love to see you! As usual, please have a look below for important announcements/updates and information on events and opportunities. 


IFSTAL Launch and Term 1 events  

IFSTAL 2017/18 launches on October 19th. We'll be livestreaming between the different IFSTAL institutions and hosting discussions and networking receptions locally. See the Events section of the Portal for more details of how to attend the launch event at your local site, meet other IFSTAL participants, alumni and staff and get involved with IFSTAL.

  • Workshop 1: Food Systems – Big Issues and Challenges. November 1st (Warwick) November 2nd (all other institutions)  

  • Away Day: Communicating in the Food System. November 11th, University of Reading 

  • Workshop 2: Scoping Interventions – a Systems Approach. November 15th (Warwick) November 16th (all other institutions) 

  • Webinar: with Dr Barbara Haesler (RVC) and Prof Martin Caraher (City). November 21st online (see portal for details) 

  • PhD Workshop: November 21st, University of Oxford  

  • Public Lecture: Professor Tim Lang, December 1st, SOAS, University of London (see portal for local events).

Calls for sessions/papers:  

  • Oxford Real Farming Conference 2018. The 2018 Oxford Real Farming Conference will be held in the Oxford Town Hall on 4th & 5th January. As always, this unique gathering of the UK's sustainable and organic food and farming movements will offer a practical mix of on-farm advice, showcasing new techniques for best practice in agroecological farming, as well as broader discussions on what needs to change to create real change in the food system. Becoming IFSTAL Alumnus 

Current students due to finish have now officially become IFSTAL ‘alumni’. To stay connected with IFSTAL and our Food Systems Community after graduating you can: 

  • Be a part of a large and diverse community of over 900 food systems thinkers including junior and senior workplace practitioners, alumni and students. 

  • Find out about relevant careers and skills development opportunities including jobs, internships, research opportunities and placements. 

  • Access IFSTAL’s online resources on the Portal. 

  • Keep in touch with your peers and friends from IFSTAL  

  • Be invited to selected IFSTAL events. 

There are a number of ways to stay connected: 

  • Update your email in the Portal to a personal email address so that you can continue to access it after your institutional email expires. 

  • Login as usual 

  • Click on your name in the top right corner and select edit profile 

  • Go to your email address and change to your new address 

  • Scroll down to update profile and click. 

  • This should then save your new email. 

  • Sign up to the IFSTAL partners mailing list: http://eepurl.com/cQdDFj 

  • Join the IFSTAL LinkedIn group  

  • Follow us on Twitter and Facebook. 

  • Become an IFSTAL alumni ambassador for your institution – Contact Rosina if you are interested
